Tokyo stocks slid in early trading Monday as Standard & Poor's downgrade of U.S. sovereign debt prompted investors to move their assets to a safer location.

In addition to fears of economic instability in the U.S. and Europe, Japan's markets have been dragged down in recent days by the steadily strengthening yen, which has pinched profits at exporters, making their goods more expensive on global markets. Many analysts have suggested that the S&P downgrade could further weaken the dollar against the yen, as investors dump more U.S. assets in response.
